Even at the highest speed possible, the pursuer couldn't keep up and soon Kevin had guided the old car away from the van and to a large house. I must've looked confused, because Joe leaned over and said, "This is our house."Of course! I thought as I stepped out of the car. Nick would tutor me at his house! What, did I think they would bring me to the library or something?After an hour of shoving unexciting facts in my head, Nick stretched. "I think we should take a break now.""Ya think." I growled, slumped back on the chair. "I think that's enough math for the year."Nick laughed. "You've only learned some geometry." He grabbed a bottle of water off the counter. "Do you want a drink, Ring?"I shook my head. Why would I want anything Jonas-tainted? "Aren't we done with this tutoring?""No, Mr. H said 'two hours'. Besides, you still have--.""NICK!"Joe lumbered into the room, trying to carry a large pile of letters. "Nick, come help me with the fan mail before Kevin comes downstairs and sees that I can't carry all these."I couldn't help but laugh as the two staggered under the weight of the papers. I had no idea the Jonas Brothers get that much fan mails. As soon as Nick and Joe pushed everything into a corner, Joe walked over and studied the books laid out in front of me. "Math, huh?"Nick looked up from a letter he was reading. "No, Joe. You can't tutor her."Joe turned to his brother. "Aw, come on. I have nothing better to do."I shifted my weight, and my phone fell out of my pocket. My eye caught the time: 6:45 pm. I had exactly fifteen minutes before dinner with Sam. My mom was extremely strict when it came to dinner time, and if I was late even a few seconds, I would get grounded. There was no way I could get back home on foot in time.Nick noticed my discomfort. "Ring? Are you okay?"I stood up and began shoving books into my bag. "I'm fine, but I have to go now. Got something at 7, and I have fifteen minutes to get back home.""You can borrow my bike." Joe offered, opening the fridge and searching for something to eat. I eyed him suspiciously. Should I trust him? Then, I decided to give in. I had about thirteen minutes left to get home before I received two scoldings: one from my mom, and the other from Sam. Joe led me into the garage, where he pulled out a bike and wheeled it over to me. "This is my new bike. Just return it when you come over after school tomorrow."I climbed onto the bike. I was surprised at Joe's generosity—the bike was in good condition. Usually, when I asked to borrow something from Sam, she gave me "her old coat" or "the headphones she doesn't use anymore." "Okay. Tell Nick I said bye." I put one sneaker on the pedal, and hesitated. "Thanks." The word felt dry and unused in my mouth. It felt weird saying that to a Jonas Brother.Joe waved.I made it home just in time for dinner. My mom allowed Sam to sleep over that night, and even though Sam was my best friend, I wished she didn't. All night, Sam begged me to talk about my time at the Jonas Brothers' house. I answered as many as I could, but it was hard. Each answer fought its way over the old walls of hate and out of my mouth. But next to the wall of hate, there was a new feeling. It was like a river, gushing against the wall. Sometimes an answer would flow easily out of my mouth, unblocked. But other times it would get stuck against the wall, and it was harder. Either way, the new feeling was confusing. I think I was beginning to like the Jonas Brothers.
