I upgraded the "Toshiba Sucks" Made-for-Vista Laptop, the laptop which Toshiba did not provide any drivers for XP so people couldn't downgrade from Vista easily. It runs Ubuntu 8.04 so well that my Belkin MIMO Wireless USB works now, and so does the headphone port.. It also plays videos in Firefox 3.0 and Flash 9, which is bundled on the CD. The DVDplayer works too, I got the encrypted DVD playback to work as well as Miro video podcasts.. To get miro to work with gstreamer, you need to change this file: /usr/share/python-support/miro/miro/frontend_implementation/VideoDisplay.pychange similar to these lines #self.add_renderer("xinerenderer") self.add_renderer("gstrenderer")Synaptic Touchpad is supported without a need to install separate drivers. The headphones too.. The volume dial for some reason has stopped working, but it's no big deal, I'm sure there is a fix, the dial works (GUI feedback exists showing the setting) but its not connected with the mixer for some reason. Two wireless devices I tried with it, the Dynex Wireless-G and the Belkin MIMO USB card works with it, it even permits you to select between wireless network cards through the same interface, and permitted me to plug in one while removing the other without a hitch. Wine works fine, I played a game of Burgertime in MAME upon install, worked well.. And as seen in this video, I'm watching Iggy Pop from wayback, when he was with the stooges, playing on Firefox in Flash 9.. I plan to replace Flash 9 with the Flash 10 Beta soon.. This video was converted on the laptop seen in this video, using OggConvert, and uploaded to youtube directly. OggConvert converts any gstreamer video format (* anything *) to the open source ogg format, or to the matroska video format. Youtube will convert the Ogg video format.. Over 100 of the videos on my channel were converted to Ogg and uploaded to youtube..

Nov 19, 2008 - Maybe.. DirectX 9.0c does.. But I haven't been too impressed with the recent version of Wine. This is firefox 3.0 native running Flash 10 Native, I'm not using wine anywhere in this video..

Nov 19, 2008 - whoa, I just put Ubuntu in my old ten year old computer, I'm happy with it but I need more ram and a wireless desktop card to make it suitable for me [and it'll become MY computer] wich I plan to do in the near future ^_^.

Nov 19, 2008 - I have a friend, who was reluctant to use Linux until do to some circumstances his job situation was threatened, and decided to install Xubuntu on another PC so he could learn Java.. And he's been very satisfied with it.. He likes the fact that it Xubuntu supports updates like Windows.. But I corrected him on it.. Microsoft does updates of its own libraries and software, they don't do updates of other peoples software. Ubuntu updates everything and even does MD5 "fingerprint" validation.

Nov 19, 2008 - I came up with the "fingerprint" part just to draw an analogy, it is just a complex CRC (cyclic redundancy check) of the file to a code obtained from the distribution site to verify that the file downloaded matches the hash of the file on the remote site. That means no viruses or security holes, unless the file being checked has security flaws as would the file on the site of the original distributor. Windows probably has this level or scrutiny, but not with the same breath of coverage.

Nov 19, 2008 - Wow, you're making me consider putting Ubuntu on my Gateway P-6831FX laptop I'm getting sometime in the next month. 1 thing I can't wait to try is upgrading Wine's DirectX 9 to DX 10. I've seen people have made a working version for XP, called DirectX 10 RC 2 "Fix 3", so I'm intrigued to see if it will work in Wine at all. I think it will.
